Proving immersion cooling inside a running facility
A first-of-kind liquid immersion cooling pilot deployed inside an operational Chicago data center, beginning with 10 x 34 kW immersion tanks and building to a final deployment of 30. Making the tanks work required revisions to the electrical system, looping the chilled water system into a Tier II IDF network, a hot aisle containment system supporting the electrical, mechanical and telecom modules, spill protection assemblies, and steel gantry supports for the cooling system.
The objective was to prove the viability of transitioning from conventional cooling to liquid immersion in a live environment. The pilot was completed within scope and budget with all technical issues resolved, and the approach is planned for deployment across the client's future AI data centers.
